Account standing at the amounts given on page 8 of the Memoran- dum which show a balance of $123,017.03 in favour of the War Department. I have also earnestly to beg that you will secure the acceptance of the complete recommendations without modification by the War Department and Treasury. The intricate questions con- nected with Military lands and reserves in this Colony who h since 1883 have formed the subject of continued discussion bet- ween the Military and Civil Authorities have been comprehensively
with
dealt by a special Officer deputed by the War Department who has proposed an equitable settlement on principles of which the adop- tion should minimize the chance of similar difficulties arising in the future. I am prepared, and so I understand is the General Officer Commanding, to accept this settlement as a whole. 1 should not however, especially having regard to its independent
source, be justified in accepting on behalf of the Colony any modifi -cation of it less favourable to Colonial interests.
13.
Should the settlement finally dispose of the
long standing disputes over the matters it deals with Colonel Lewis will have rendered, not only to the War Department but also to this Government, a valuable service and in any event I trust that the able and fair-minded manner in which he has set about his difficult task, may receive due recognition,
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
M. Wuthen
